The AMD heat sink is barely 5/8" tall with a 1/2" fan on it, just over 1" total from CPU to top of fan. I bet with a bigger heat sink it could even go fan less. What is most noticed though is how quiet it operates. I didn't really notice much performance boost from 3.0 GHz Sempron III, but I'm using 16GB memory and 256GB SSD. AMD RADEON HD 7800 SERIES NEWEGG DRIVERSDual display as soon as drivers loaded worked like a champ. Mediocre graphics performance by todays standards, but for any computer that isn't a gaming machine it is extremely capable. Pros: Very low power consumption, my ceiling fan makes more noise than this does. Now if only there were some ITX FM2+ motherboards that weren't pushing $100. If you are trying to build something that doesn't fit similar I'm using a 250W one and it's more than enough. Also enables you to use very low wattage psu without worry. Since the stock heatsink is quiet and powerful enough to keep it cool, this is ideal for a budget mini itx build that performs similarly to current gen consoles, without the OS restriction. ![]() Overall Review: Why would you consider this locked multiplier APU that you can get better parts for cheaper? Needs good ram to fully utilize the integrated graphics, which runs up the price of the total build more. Locked multiplier? Get the 7850k if you want that. Surprisingly the stock heatsink keeps it cool under load quietly.Ĭons: Slightly more expensive than if you bought dedicated gpu and cpu of equal performance. Runs most games on medium/low settings well enough at 1080/720p Pros: Lower watt than 7850k for almost identical performance However only buy this APU if you need the absolute best performance per watt else you're better off saving money and going for the A8-7600. I bought one of these to build a custom "Steam / HTPC" box as I'm not impressed with the price of the Steam machines released by big manufacturers. ![]() AMD RADEON HD 7800 SERIES NEWEGG PROAlthough somewhat niche this is an area Intel can't really compete in without spending a lot more on an Iris Pro setup. Overall Review: I think this APU offers the best performance that will fit in a tight low profile enclosure. I'm experimenting with 1866Mhz speeds with tightened timings and a slight blcock boost to bring up the FPS closer to 2133 speeds but I've yet to obtain 100% stability.Ĥ5W mode neuters CPU performance a little while GPU active (GPU appears to take priority) however if you have a motherboard with adequate voltage controls you can leave the APU at the default 65W and undervolt manually to meet somewhere in between 45W and 65W which is still cool enough for stock cooler and good performance. ![]() What's weird is the CPU set at 2133 will pass memtest and large Prime FFT for hours but fire a modern game (Diablo 3, Titanfall) and it crashes within minutes. Played with memory timings, voltages (northbridge CPU etc) to no avail. I've paired it with a quality board (Gigabyte GA-F2A88XN-WiFI) and tried 3 separate pairs of DDR2400 memory. Higher detail modern gaming possible at 720/900P resolutions.Ĭons: After numerous attempts I'm unable to get 2133Mhz memory stable with this APU.Īccording to AMD this CPU officially supports 2133 speeds so a little unhappy with the results. AMD RADEON HD 7800 SERIES NEWEGG 1080PAble to run majority of my steam library at 1080P with low/medium details. Pros: Fast CPU and very energy efficient when run in 45W mode or when manually undervolted. ![]()
